| Tesoro came into Friday nights match-up with more than just the South Coast League title to defend; they had an undefeated record and the number one ranking in Orange County to fight for. The Titans finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record, putting the Dolphins away by exploding for 21 points in the fourth quarter, 56-26.

Tesoro had a perfect start to the game when Trevor Weis picked-off Dana Hills quarterback Sean Schroeder on the opening possession at mid-field and walked his way into the end zone. Schroeder’s interception was just the beginning of long night for the junior quarterback. The Tesoro defense was stingy all night forcing four turnovers and taking two interceptions to the house.
Dana Hills pulled within one score at 28-20 in third quarter when Schroeder found his wide-out Dylan Denso wide-open down the middle. Tesoro came back with touchdowns on their next three possessions, stomping out any thought of a comeback.
Tesoro Head Coach Brian Barnes said the team wasn’t concerned when the score got a little close.
“To be honest, we weren’t worried at all. Our kids wanted it and they were fired up,” Barnes said.
On their ensuing possession after the Dolphins pulled to within 28-20, the Titans marched right down the field, concluding the drive with Titans quarterback Robbie Picazo hooking up with wide-out Zach Bevan on a 37-yard strike to bring the score to 35-20 in the third quarter. Titans Wideout/Defensive back Brett Gudium put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter when the Dana Hills defense forgot to account for him but Picazo didn’t, hitting a wide open Gudium for a 35-yard touchdown strike.
“Nobody came over to cover me. We actually had a run play called, I yelled Robbie’s name, he saw nobody on me, audibled and found me open,” Gudium said.
Gudium, on the ensuing drive, picked off Dolphins quarterback Schroeder and took it all the way in for the score, putting up two touchdowns for the Titans in a matter of seconds.
“I had a feeling they were in 2 minute and looking for the sidelines, so I jumped the route and got some great blocking from my guys and took it in,” Gudium said.
Titans quarterback Picazo had all day to find receivers behind the massive Tesoro offensive line, which was visibly larger than the Dana Hills defensive front. Picazo was only sacked once throughout the game behind an offensive line featuring three 300 pounders. Picazo finished the day 17 of 22 with 241 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Tesoro Head Coach Barnes pointed to the offensive line as the stable unit all year long.
“The line has been tremendous all year long, I think they are the best bunch around, with 3 guys over 300 pounds. It’s exciting. Hopefully, we play for 5 more weeks,” Barnes said.
Barnes, who was doused with the customary Gatorade shower by his players, was standing with his father, Los Alamitos coach John Barnes, during the post-game celebration and didn’t want to speculate on the possible match-up with dad in the playoffs.
“We don’t want to talk about that,” Brian Barnes said.
His father bellowed in the background, “Bring on Tesoro!” John Barnes said.
The possibility is now reality. The Pac-5 playoff bracket, which was released on Sunday morning, has father and son facing off with their respective teams in the opening round this Friday.
