Q&A with Augie DeBiase:
DSU: What do you think distinguishes you from every other quarterback in the nation?
AD: I’m a good leader, not afraid to step up and say something. I work really hard. I don’t think that anyone in the country can out work me.
DSU: What extracurricular or community involvement activities do you participate in?
AD: I play basketball on top of football. Also, my little brother has Down syndrome so I always try to help out with that a lot. He is in a baseball league with kids who have challenges like autism and Down syndrome. I volunteer for that and help the kids.
DSU: What has working with your brother’s baseball team taught you about yourself?
AD: I’m very blessed. It’s a blessing to be able to wake up and work out and be on the football team. It’s a blessing to do all of those things. It is a lot of fun helping out those kids and it really humbles me; it brings out a kind of softness in your heart.
DSU: Do you have a favorite quarterback or someone you model your game after?
AD: My favorite quarterback is either Tom Brady or Tim Tebow. Tim grew up in Jacksonville and was home schooled like me. Overall though Tom Brady is probably my favorite because he is a great leader and is very calm under pressure.
DSU: How have you evolved over the past few years as a quarterback?
AD: Coach Dickinson tremendously helped me. I think I still would have been a pretty good athlete, but I don’t think I would be anywhere nearas good as I am now. I used to be an over-strider and squeeze the ball and do a ton of things that were wrong. He helped me correct a lot of stuff out over the past year and a half we’ve been working together.
DSU: What is your proudest moment in football? What is your proudest moment off the field?
AD: There is a couple of things that come to mind. When I was in seventh grade I got moved up to varsity; I never played but it was a tremendous honor. Before this year with Landrum I had never thrown more than 10 touchdown passes in a season and this year I doubled that. Off the field my brother (Markie) is on my dad’s travel AAU Basketball team and he doesn’t get to play much, but I love the joy when he does get in the game. He’s playing with some of the best kids around and he’s out there having fun.
DSU: What TV-show marathon will keep you on the couch all day?
AD: I could watch anything about sports all day. I like ESPN 30-for-30 series. I like watching any sports-related documentaries.
DSU: Who or what has been your biggest influence on football? How so?
AD: I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without Jesus Christ so he is number one; My dad is number two and Coach D is number three. Those guys have always encouraged me and I probably wasn’t really good when I started training.
DSU: List any honors or awards you have received (include athletic and non-athletic awards)
AD: School-wise I’ve never earned anything less than a B on a report card from Kindergarten till now. Related to football, I was the first sixth grader to ever score a touchdown at my school, Providence. Last year I played in the Junior Rank All-American Game. I was the first seventh grader to ever get moved up to Varsity. This year I was invited to the Top Gun QB Camp. I was chosen to play in the EastBay All-American Game. I also set the record for most passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback at my middle school.
DSU: What is your favorite movie?
AD: If I had to pick a motivational movie it would be Remember the Titans or Invincible. If it was a Christian movie it would be Facing the Giants.
DSU: Who is your favorite NFL team?
AD: I’ve lived in Jacksonville my whole life so it’s probably the Jaguars, but if not the Jags, then the Jets.
DSU: What is your favorite website?
AD: Youtube; I like watching funny videos.
DSU: What is your favorite food?
AD: Pizza or steak
DSU: Have you had any contact with college coaches yet?
AD: I stayed at a hotel during the EastBay All-American game where a lot of college coaches were staying and I talked to a few of them. I wrote a letter to six of the coaches I talked to from Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia and Southern California. I played basketball with USC’s offensive coordinator when they lived in Jacksonville.
